Combining performance with practicality, the Scimitar GTE transcended these two worlds to create a cult classic with a royal connection…
The Reliant Scimitar can trace its roots back to 1964 with the original Scimitar GT, an updated interpretation of an early Daimler SP250 prototype. Through refinements of that first-generation coupe by the team at Ogle Design and Reliant’s engineering team of John Crosthwaite and fibreglass specialist Ken Wood, in 1968 the world would be introduced to the new Scimitar GTE.
The sleek, 2-door sports estate took styling cues from shooting-brake coupes of the 1960s and looked ahead to the 1970s and beyond with its high waisted bodylines and more open cabin to give it a truly modern feel for the time. The GTE allowed for a true 4-seater sports car with the practicality of a hatchback.
The car was made famous by a host of high-profile owners, most notably HRH Princess Anne who went on to own 8 of these particular cars.
Our 1973 Reliant Scimitar GTE (SE5A) is finished in a beautiful, dazzling shade of Yellow complimented by an excellent quality black interior, with recently fitted replacement carpet set, and matching black sunroof. The car also features a vintage style aftermarket RetroSound stereo upgrade in the wood-style dash and Wolfrace 6×14 ‘slot-mag’ style wheels from a later SE6A Scimitar.
Fitted with a 3.0-litre V6 and a 4-speed manual gearbox, the Scimitar GTE’s performance means that its practicality was paired with the performance of long-legged GT car, of which just over 5000 were built making it Reliant’s most successful Scimitar model.
The cars history file features invoices from notable parts specialists such as Graham Walker Ltd and others which date back to the late 1980s including windscreen stickers relating to its membership of the Reliant Sabre and Scimitar Owners Club.
